A man has been found guilty of stalking comedian Joe Lycett near his residence in Birmingham, marking a significant and unsettling development in the case. Both individuals were living on the same street in Kings Heath during the troubling period of harassment.
In one alarming incident, CCTV footage captured Egerton shouting loudly on the street close to Mr. Lycett's home, which prompted concerned neighbors to alert the authorities. In the video, he could be heard exclaiming, "I hope to make your life a little more light-hearted tomorrow," a statement that raises eyebrows about his intentions.
Egerton claimed that his messages to the comedian were an attempt to "reach out for help." He further expressed his belief that Mr. Lycett had a duty to ensure his well-being, stating, "He’s got no reason to not send someone round to check that I’m OK. By not dealing with me properly he has caused these chains of events."
Interestingly, he added, "I can tell he [Mr. Lycett] is enjoying this, lapping it up with the attention from the public and media," suggesting a complex view of the interaction between celebrity and public perception. District Judge Tanweer Ikram noted that the defendant's behavior evidently caused Mr. Lycett legitimate concern regarding his safety and overall well-being. The court had previously heard Mr. Lycett characterize the social media posts as "alarming and distressing," yet he expressed no animosity towards Egerton, instead wishing him the help and support he needed.
In response to the situation, the judge mandated a psychiatric evaluation for Egerton and instructed him to collaborate with a probation officer prior to his sentencing. As part of the legal proceedings, he was released on bail under strict conditions, including a prohibition from approaching certain areas of the road where Mr. Lycett resides and from initiating any contact with him.
