Get ready for a documentary that's anything but ordinary! 'I'm Chevy Chase, and You're Not' is a captivating journey into the life of a legendary comedian, and it's about to get real.**
Marina Zenovich, the director behind this CNN doc, had a unique challenge: creating a film about Chevy Chase with zero editorial control from the man himself. Talk about a bold move!
As the film begins, you can almost hear the tension in the air. Zenovich, known for her work on 'Lance' and 'Robin Williams: Come Inside My Mind', approaches Chase with a simple question: 'I'm just trying to figure you out.' His response? A blunt, 'No shit. It's not going to be easy for you.'
But here's where it gets controversial... Chase's honesty might have taken Zenovich by surprise, but it also gave her an unexpected advantage. She reveals, 'I'd never done an interview where someone was so rude to me. But I was so worried about how to bring up the fact that everyone thinks he's an asshole. I thought he'd throw me out! So when he said it first, I knew I had my way in.'
The doc, premiering on January 1st, takes us on a rollercoaster ride through Chase's life. From his early days on 'Saturday Night Live' to his leading man status, we explore his three marriages, battles with addiction, a near-death experience, childhood trauma, and his infamous on-set disputes. It's a raw and unfiltered look at the man behind the superstar bravado.
And this is the part most people miss... Zenovich wanted to uncover the real Chevy Chase. 'I wanted to figure out who was the true person beneath the guarded and fragile exterior we see on camera. Was there self-awareness? After interviewing him extensively, I can say yes - and there's a whole lot of pain and heartache too.'
In addition to Chase and his family, the doc features revealing interviews with his former collaborators and friends, including Mike Ovitz, Dan Aykroyd, and Beverly D'Angelo. But getting these interviews wasn't easy.
'Chevy is incredibly quick-witted and always on,' says P.G. Morgan, Zenovich's husband and producing partner. 'You have to be ready to match his wit and go toe-to-toe with him. It was a challenging process.'
But why would Chase agree to a documentary that isn't exactly flattering? Zenovich believes it might be a response to a book written about him that his family didn't appreciate. 'I think they were trying to set the record straight. It's been a hard journey, but I think in the end, they appreciate the doc.'
Morgan adds, 'As a family, they felt he wasn't getting the recognition he deserved. With all these documentaries about his peers, it must have hurt that he wasn't included.'
As for those who declined to be interviewed, like Steve Martin and Christopher Guest, Zenovich leaves it open-ended. 'The absences speak for themselves. Whether it's scheduling, personal reasons, or saving their stories for their own doc, we respect their decisions. In the end, I believe we have the right mix of voices.'
Getting interviews for this doc was no easy feat. Every single person from 'Community' said no, but Zenovich persisted. She even ran into Dan Harmon and got his number, only to be declined later. It was a lucky break when 'Community' director Jay Chandrasekhar agreed to participate. 'He has an amazing delivery and was willing to go there. If he had said no, I'd have been in trouble!'
'I'm Chevy Chase, and You're Not' premieres on CNN on January 1st. It's a must-watch for anyone curious about the real Chevy Chase - the pain, the heartache, and the raw honesty that lies beneath the superstar facade.
So, what do you think? Is this doc a brave exploration of a complex man, or does it cross a line? We'd love to hear your thoughts in the comments!
